Neutralizing Color Casts With The Photo Filter In Photoshop

Neutralizing Color Casts With The Photo Filter In Photoshop

In this Photoshop photograph editing tutorial, we're going to wait at how to quickly neutralize a color cast in a photo using Photoshop's Photo Filter adjustment.

Here'south the prototype I'll be using for this tutorial, which has quite an obvious orange color bandage:

The original image

Here's how it will wait after removing the color bandage with the Photograph Filter:

The final result

Let's get started!

Step ane: Add A Photo Filter Aligning Layer

With the image open in Photoshop, the first thing we need to do is add together a Photo Filter adjustment layer. To do that, click on the New Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette:

Clicking the 'New Adjustment Layer' icon at the bottom of Photoshop's Layers palette.

Click the "New Adjustment Layer" icon at the lesser of the Layers palette.

Then select Photograph Filter from the list:

Selecting 'Photo Filter' from the list of Adjustment Layers.

Select "Photo Filter" from the list of Adjustment Layers.

This will bring upwardly the Photo Filter dialog box:

Photoshop's Photo Filter dialog box.

The "Photo Filter" dialog box.

Step 2: Sample The Color Yous Want To Remove From The Prototype

Click on the color swatch to the right of the word "Color" in the Photo Filter dialog box:

Clicking on the color swatch in the Photo Filter dialog box.

Click on the colour swatch.

This will bring upwardly Photoshop's Color Picker:

Photoshop's Color Picker.

Clicking the color swatch brings upward the Color Picker.

Rather than choosing a colour from inside the Color Picker, motility your mouse over the image, and you'll see your mouse cursor alter into the Eyedropper icon. We're going to sample the color that'due south giving us our problem. To do that, click on an surface area inside the epitome where the problem colour is most noticeable. I'm going to click on the equus caballus'south mane to sample the orangish color:

Click on the image to sample the problem color.

Don't exit out of the Colour Picker yet. We're going to employ it to invert the sampled color next.

Footstep 3: Capsize The Color In The Color Picker

In order to neutralize the color cast, nosotros're going to invert the problem color that we merely sampled, which volition give us the exact opposite color. We tin can and so utilize the Photo Filter to combine the inverted (contrary) color with the problem color, which will finer cancel out the color cast. In order to do that, we first need to invert the color, and the easiest way to do that inside the Color Picker is with the Lab color options, circled in red below:

The Lab color options in Photoshop's Color Picker.

The "Lab" options along the far right of the Color Picker.

Ignore the "L" option, which stands for "Lightness", since we're not interested in changing any lightness values. All we desire to do is change the colour, which is controlled by both the a and b options. As nosotros can see in the Color Picker above, the orangish color I sampled from my image is made from an "a" value of 26 and a "b" value of 79. Your numbers will most likely be different. To invert the color, all I need to do is add together a negative ("-") sign in front of both numbers, similar so:

Inverting the orange color using the Lab color options in the Color Picker.

Add a negative ("-") sign in front of the "a" and "b" values to capsize the color.

If you already had a negative sign in your "a" or "b" values, just remove it. Then add a negative sign if in that location isn't one, and remove it if there is 1 to invert the color. We tin see in the Color Picker above that my color has now changed to more than of a blue color, and that is the reverse of the orange color I sampled. I tin can now use this color to neutralize my color cast.

Click OK when you're done to exit out of the Color Picker.

Stride 4: Elevate The Density Slider To Remove The Color Cast

Dorsum in the Photo Filter dialog box, I can see that the color swatch is at present showing my inverted colour. All I need to do at this betoken to remove the color cast is drag the Density slider to the right, which volition decide how much of my inverted color is being composite into the paradigm, until my image looks ameliorate. In my example, I don't want to remove the orangish completely because I think it adds a bit of warmth to the paradigm, and so I'll leave simply a hint of it in. I think a Density value of around 74% works best here:

Dragging the Density slider to the right to correct the color cast.

Drag the Density slider to the right until the color cast is removed.

Here'due south my paradigm at this point:

Pace 5: Heave The Colors With A Hue/Saturation Adjustment

The just trouble at present is that the colors are looking a little wearisome, so I'm going to fix that past boosting the color saturation with a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. To do that, click on the New Adjustment Layer icon once once more at the bottom of the Layers palette:

Clicking the New Adjustment Layer icon.

Click the "New Adjustment Layer" icon at the lesser of the Layers palette.

This time, choose Hue/Saturation from the list:

Selecting 'Hue/Saturation' from the list of Adjustment Layers.

Select "Hue/Saturation" from the list of Aligning Layers.

This brings up the Hue/Saturation aligning dialog box. I'g going to drag the Saturation slider in the middle towards the right to increase the color saturation in the image. Go along an eye on your image to see a preview of what'south happening as you drag. I'g going to elevate mine to a value of virtually "+twenty":

Dragging the Saturation slider to boost the colors in the image.

Drag the "Saturation" slider towards the correct to boost the colors in the epitome.

Click OK when y'all're washed to exit out of the Hue/Saturation dialog box, and you're done! Here, one time once again, is my original image:

And here is the final issue after boosting the colors with Hue/Saturation:
